Consumption and Debt Aversion: An Experimental Study
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper tests how subjects behave in an intertemporal consumption/saving experiment when borrowing is allowed and whether subjects treat debt differently than savings. Two treatments create environments where either saving or borrowing is required for optimal consumption. Since both treatments share the same optimal consumption levels, actual consumption choices can be directly compared across treatments. The experimental findings imply that deviations from optimal behavior are higher when subjects have to borrow than when they have to save in order to consume optimally, suggesting debt-aversion. Signifiant underconsumption is observed when subjects have to borrow in order to reach optimal consumption. Only weak evidence is found suggesting that subjects over-consume when saving is necessary for optimal consumption. JEL-Classification: C91, D81, E21

متن کاملNber Working Paper Series Educational Debt Burden and Career Choice: Evidence from a Financial Aid Experiment at Nyu Law School
This paper examines the influence of educational debt aversion on the career choice of law school students, including the decision to attend law school and the decision to work in public interest law. To isolate the role of debt aversion, I analyze experimental data from NYU Law School’s Innovative Financial Aid Study in which two career-contingent financial aid packages were randomly assigned ...
متن کاملThe inflation risk premium on government debt in an overlapping generations model
An overlapping generations model with long run inflation risk and a cash-in-advance constraint is used to derive a second-order accurate closed-form solution for the inflation risk premium on long-term government debt. The model predicts that the inflation risk premium depends crucially on the relative importance of nominal bonds and capital as sources of retirement consumption. In a calibrated...
متن کاملEntrepreneurial Finance and the Non - diversifiable Risk ∗
Entrepreneurs face significant non-diversifiable idiosyncratic business risks. In a dynamic incomplete-markets model of entrepreneurial finance, we show that such risks have important implications for their interdependent consumption/saving, portfolio choice, financing, investment, and endogenous default/cash-out decisions. Even though more risk-averse entrepreneurs default earlier for given de...
متن کاملRisk aversion and debt maturity structure
We study the relationship of risk aversion and debt maturity structure. In a model in which adverse selection in financial markets creates a role for the use of short-term debt, we allow the possibility of borrowers being risk-averse. This creates a trade-off between reduced expected financing costs and higher risk and allows for the study of the effect of risk aversion on optimal maturity stru...
